Hypoxia adapted relative biological effectiveness models for proton therapy

A paper investigating the different models for Oxygen Enhancement Ratio (OER). First author Guillermo Garrido Hernandez (guillermo.g.hernandez@ntnu.no) is a PhD student in the 180N-project at NTNU in Trondheim and also associated with the Bioproton project.

The effect of protons in hypoxic cells is a topic of high clinical relevance as hypoxia is related to poor treatment outcome. Models accounting for these effects could improve proton therapy planning and optimization and through that the quality of the treatment

The paper Illustrates that several models give very similar estimates for OER in proton therapy, while models intended primarily for use in carbon ion therapy shows higher OER values for low oxygen levels. Methodology and selected results are re-printed from the paper below:
